The dolphin experience is a huge part of it, and I personally would have bitterly regretted not doing it. The park is sumptuous, I wouldn't even classify it as a theme park. In fact after the shuttle launch (which can't be topped), it probably the best 'thing' we did during our stay. Like you I was wondering if it was worth it before I bit the bullet and booked 4 tickets. I've done this with my wife and two kids (14 and 10) just a week ago. And then if you want you can go over to an area that has pictures. They take some photos and video too, but don't interupt your time to get pictures, have you smile for the camera multile times, etc., and turn the experience into a photo shoot. I' prefer the approach the three other dolphin swim palces had. I'm sure that this helps the Discovery Cove profit margin, but I didn't appreciate this. I think in these circumstances, it's very natural for kids to want pictures / videos and parents to buy more than they normally would seeing all the other people buying. There was no pressure to buy, but we were taken to an area where for a period of time that was probably equivalent to the dolphin swim time we were seated and shown pictures and videos, given prices, and the opportunity to buy. We were the only people in our group that spent less than $80 on pictures/videos. One lady even said that this was a lifetime dream of hers and she was just thrilled with the experience. Other's in our group who had never done a dolphin swim thought it was worth every penny, and I heard comments like, "This is the coolest thing I've ever done".
We were in the minority in our opinion, though.
I felt like it was more like a photo shoot than a dolphin swim. It was by far the most lame and most expensive of four dolphin experiences we've done (all three of us were in complete agreement on that account). My husband, son, and I who have done other dolphin swim thought it was an overpriced disappointment. Worth it is definately a matter of opinion. The dolphin swim is short, staged, and very expensive.
